VENUE: HSB357, 2nd Floor, Humanities & Sciences Block

( Near Gajendra Circle Next to Admin Building)

Campus:

The main entrance of IIT Madras is on Chennai's Sardar Patel Road, flanked by the residential districts of Adyar and Velachery. The campus is close to the Raj Bhavan, the official seat of the Governor of Tamilnadu. Other entrances are located in Velachery (near Anna Garden MTC bus stop, Velachery Main Road), Gandhi Road (known as Krishna Hostel gate or Toll Gate) and Taramani gate (close to Ascendas Tech Park).

The campus is located 10 km from the Chennai Airport, 12 km from the Chennai Central Railway station, and is well connected by buses.

Two parallel roads, Bonn Avenue and Delhi Avenue, cut through the faculty residential area shrouded under a canopy of green, before they meet at the Gajendra Circle, near the Administrative Block. Buses and electric mini buses ply between the gate, Gajendra Circle, the academic zone, and the hostels.

How to Reach:

The IIT campus is located on the Sardar Patel Road, midway between the Raj Bhavan and Adyar bus terminus and is around 12 km from Chennai Central Railway Station. Other landmarks include the Guindy Snake Park near the IIT main gate and the Central Leather Reasearch Institute (CLRI) campus opposite the IIT campus.

From the Airport: The best way to reach IIT is to get a prepaid taxi from the airport itself. The prepaid counter is inside the airport, just before the exit. One can take a prepaid coupon to IIT Campus. You have to pay the entire amount at the prepaid counter and get the receipt.

From the Railway Station:If you have light luggage (a bag or an attache) you may take a bus or train to IIT. The bus stop is just across the road from the Central Railway Station (in front of Government General Hospital). You could use the subway to cross the road which is perpetually busy. There are direct buses to IIT, which start at the Central Station bus stop. If you take any of them, get down at Gandhi Mandapam or CLRI, which is at walking distance from the IIT main gate. Otherwise, take any bus to Saidapet and from there, any bus heading for Adyar, Thiruvanmiyur or Besant Nagar which will drop you right in front of the IIT gate. You could also take any bus from the railway station to Adyar; there are frequent buses from Adyar Signal to the campus. Once you reach the IN GATE, there are buses to the hostels.

If you have light luggage, you may choose to come by train also. If you are arriving at Chennai Central station, you may either catch a train from Park station or from the Park Town station. If you are catching train from Park station, you should get down at Guindy and catch any bus or share auto going to Adyar, Besant Nagar or Thiruvanmiyur and get down in front of IIT. If you are catching train from Park Town, you should get down at Kasturibai Nagar. IIT is at walking distance from this station. Both Park and Park Town stations are quite close to the Central Railway station. If you are reaching Chennai Egmore, then catch train to Guindy and then catch any bus going to Adyar, Besant Nagar or Thiruanmiyur.

From Koyembedu Bus Stand:If you are arriving at Koyembedu bus terminus, then the city transport bus stand is quite close to the outstation bus stand. There are plenty of buses going to Thiruanmiyur/Besant Nagar or to Velachery. If you are boarding on a Velachery bus, get down at Gurunanak College stop or IIT Gate. Once you come inside the campus, there are IIT buses to take you to the hostels. If you are boarding on a bus to Thiruanmiyur or Besant Nagar, then as mentioned earlier, get down near CLRI/Gandhi Mandapam and walk to IIT Gate.

If you have not-so-light luggage, an auto-rickshaw or taxi would be the most comfortable option. There are pre-paid autorikshaws and taxis available just outside the Railway station building. There will be autorikshaw drivers approaching you as soon as you come out of the station, to take you to the destination. But they will CHEAT you and their price will be much higher than the prepaid ones. You should take a prepaid coupon to IIT (Inside). When you are taking prepaid coupon, specifically mention the destination as IIT Inside. You can take the auto up to the hostel once you get the coupon mentioning “IIT (Inside)”. Otherwise, the autorikshaw driver will charge exhorbitantly for coming inside the campus. You may also take the coupon to IIT Gate and choose to travel to the hostel in the Institute bus, which runs between 6am and 10pm. You have to pay Rs. 5/- at the prepaid counter, keep the receipt they give you and hand it over to the driver along with the money only after reaching the destination. Next to the prepaid counter there will be a traffic policeman. Once you get the prepaid coupon, give it to him and follow his instructions. There is a prepaid taxi booth also available just outside the station (both at Central and at Egmore). For both auto and taxi, you should retain the prepaid fare coupon with you untill you reach the destination. Hand over it along with the money written there to the driver once you reach the destination.
